Unit I asks you to recognise how learners differ and to match teaching to those differences. Most of the marks turn on three classifications and the two psychologists who produced them — names that are missing from almost every revision guide on this topic. This covers what is examined, who is behind it, and where the research now stands on one part of it.
What the term covers
Individual differences are the variations between learners in ability, aptitude, temperament, background and preferred ways of processing information. The principle behind the topic is straightforward: no two learners are alike, and instruction that ignores this teaches only the learners it happens to suit.
The differences are universal — every group has them; natural — they are variation, not deficiency; and multidimensional — a learner strong on one dimension may be weak on another, so single labels mislead.
A distinction the paper tests: individual differences are not learning disabilities. Differences are ordinary variation within the normal range. A disability is a diagnosable condition requiring specific intervention. Options that treat difference as something to be corrected are usually the distractor.
Where the differences come from
Heredity. Genetic contribution to intellectual capacity, aptitude and physical characteristics affecting learning.
Environment. Family background and parental education, socio-economic conditions, cultural and linguistic context, peer group.
Cognitive factors. Intelligence, creativity, processing speed, specific aptitudes.
Affective factors. Motivation — intrinsic against extrinsic — attitude, interest, emotional stability, anxiety.
Physical and health factors. Nutrition, sensory capacity, general health and its effect on attention and participation.
Questions sometimes set heredity against environment and ask which determines learning. Neither, alone. The interaction is the answer, and any option that isolates one is a distractor.
The three classifications that carry the marks
Field independence and field dependence — Herman Witkin
Witkin’s cognitive-style research, developed from the 1940s onward, distinguished learners by how far they separate an object from its surrounding context. He measured it with the Embedded Figures Test.

Witkin is the name to remember. Matching questions pair theorist with concept, and this is the pairing most often set from this topic.
Conceptual tempo — Jerome Kagan
Kagan identified a dimension of reflectivity against impulsivity, measured by his Matching Familiar Figures Test. It concerns the relationship between response speed and accuracy.
Reflective learners take longer before responding and make fewer errors. They gather more information and consider alternatives.
Impulsive learners respond quickly and make more errors, particularly on tasks with high response uncertainty.
Any scenario describing a speed-and-accuracy trade-off is a conceptual tempo question, and the answer is Kagan’s dimension rather than field independence — a confusion the options are built to exploit.
Sensory learning styles — the VAK or VAM model
Learners are classified by preferred sensory channel.
Visual — learning through sight. Subdivided into verbalists, who process written words, and imagists, who process pictures and diagrams.
Auditory — learning through sound. Subdivided into aural, learning by listening, and oral, learning by speaking.
Motor or kinaesthetic — learning through movement and manipulation. Subdivided into kinaesthetic, gross motor, and mechanical, fine motor.
The model is sometimes given as VAK (visual, auditory, kinaesthetic) and sometimes as VAM (visual, auditory, motor). Both appear; the content is the same.
What the research actually says, and why you should still learn it.
The learning-styles model is examined by UGC NET, so answer questions on it as the syllabus expects. But you should know that its central claim does not survive testing.
That claim is the meshing hypothesis: that matching instruction to a learner’s preferred modality improves learning. Pashler and colleagues reviewed the evidence in 2008 and found almost no studies using an adequate research design, and those that did failed to support it. Coffield’s 2004 review of seventy-one learning-style models found most lacked reliability or validity. Learners do report preferences. Teaching to those preferences does not measurably improve outcomes.
What does work is matching the mode to the material — teach geometry visually and pronunciation aurally, whoever is in the room. As a future teacher, that distinction matters more than the classification. As a candidate, answer what the paper asks.
Other frameworks that appear in questions
Howard Gardner — multiple intelligences. Eight distinct intelligences rather than one general capacity: linguistic, logical-mathematical, spatial, musical, bodily-kinaesthetic, interpersonal, intrapersonal, naturalistic. Set out in Frames of Mind (1983). Frequently asked, and the count is asked.
Robert Sternberg — triarchic theory. Analytical, creative and practical intelligence. Often paired against Gardner in comparison questions.
Charles Spearman — two-factor theory. General intelligence g alongside specific abilities s.
L.L. Thurstone — primary mental abilities. Seven independent factors, set against Spearman’s single general factor.
Raymond Cattell — fluid and crystallised intelligence. Reasoning capacity against accumulated knowledge; the distinction matters for adult learners, whose crystallised intelligence continues to rise as fluid intelligence declines.
David Kolb — experiential learning styles. Diverging, assimilating, converging and accommodating, derived from his learning cycle.

Teaching that accounts for difference
Three levels of response, and questions sometimes ask you to identify which a scenario describes.
Foundational adaptation. Varied examples and analogies, presentation through more than one mode, an inclusive classroom climate. Applies to everyone, requires no individual data.
Differentiated instruction. Multiple methods, varied grouping, tiered tasks pitched at different levels of complexity. Responds to identified group differences.
Personalised instruction. Individual projects, mentoring, adapted assessment, self-paced routes. Responds to the individual learner.
The distinction the paper tests is between differentiated and personalised. Differentiation adapts for identifiable groups; personalisation adapts for one learner. They are not synonyms.
Where candidates lose marks
Losing the theorists. Witkin for field independence, Kagan for conceptual tempo. Absent from most notes and present in most matching questions.
Confusing the classifications. Field independence concerns perception and context. Conceptual tempo concerns speed and accuracy. Learning styles concern sensory channel. Three separate dimensions, and options are built by mixing traits across them.
Treating difference as deficiency. Any option implying a learner type needs correcting is almost certainly wrong.
Ranking learning styles. No style is superior. Effectiveness depends on fit, not on rank.
Treating the categories as absolute. These are continua. Most learners sit somewhere between the poles rather than at one of them.
Isolating heredity or environment. The interaction is the answer.

Common questions
How is this different from the characteristics of adolescent and adult learners?
Those topics concern differences that follow from developmental stage — what learners of a given age tend to have in common. Individual differences concern variation within any age group. Both sit under learner characteristics in Unit I, and questions occasionally cross between them.
Do I need to know the psychologists by name?
Yes. Matching questions pair theorist with concept, and Witkin and Kagan are the two that recur. Gardner and Sternberg appear when intelligence is the subject.
If learning styles are not supported by research, why are they in the syllabus?
Because the syllabus reflects established educational discourse, and the model remains widely taught in teacher education. Answer as the paper expects. But knowing the research position is useful in interviews and in your own teaching, and it is the difference between having learned the topic and having understood it.
What is the difference between a learning style and a cognitive style?
Cognitive style, as in Witkin’s field independence, describes a stable characteristic of how a person perceives and organises information. Learning style describes a preference for how material is presented. The terms are often used loosely, but the distinction is real and occasionally tested.
